As a business owner, where are you at? Are you endeavouring to find ways to take your business to the next level during these turbulent times or are you just trying to keep your head above water? Do you have the support to ask better questions and make better decisions?
We all understand that running a business from the operational trenches while simultaneously managing your team can take much of your time. As a result, there are usually only a few brief moments to consider the key decisions, those decisions that stand out as game-changing decisions, which can make or sometimes break a business. Well, perhaps it’s time to look beyond the daily “seemingly more urgent but ultimately less important” decisions that keep you working in your business and start to focus on the “seemingly less urgent but ultimately more important” decisions that allow you to work on your business.
When speaking to the BusinessFIT panel recently, all were in consensus when asked who had felt on more than one occasion the sense that the key decisions in their business were not being given their necessary weight, were not being considered from every angle. The time and the support required were often fleeting luxuries at best. Can you relate? Ask yourself: if I replayed this CD, what guiding principles would have helped to craft better decisions, what are the things you would like to have known before?

Clayton Christensen, a Harvard Business School professor, when asked in an interview recently, “How do business owners manage frequent disruption?”, whether it be internal disruption in the way of managing multiple tasks or external disruption in the way of new competitors in the market. His answer, a seemingly simple one, “The first step is to learn to ask better questions.”
